Date and time
Location
The Motor House
120 West North Avenue Baltimore, MD 21201Description
Please join the Sex and Slavery Lab, in conjunction with the 2017 Center for Africana Studies Symposium: Bound/UnBound: Contemporary Black Marriage in Research, Policy, and Practice, for a graduate student workshop with Dr. Tera Hunter, Professor in the Departments of History and African American Studies at Princeton University.
Hunter's newest book, Bound in Wedlock: Slave and Free Black Marriage in the Nineteenth Century (Harvard, 2017), offers a history of marriage between people of African descent in the United States from slavery to freedom. This workshop is an opportunity for graduate students to explore the research and archival questions generated by the book and its implications for further research. Scholars working in the fields of African American and African diaspora history, women, gender, and sexuality studies, Africana studies, ethnic studies, legal studies, feminist studies, and beyond--join us!
Lunch will be provided.
This workshop is open to graduate students. Space is limited--please register below. Questions? Contact: Jessica Marie Johnson (jmj@jhu.edu)
The Sex & Slavery Lab brings scholars knowledgeable about the ways race, sex, histories of slavery, violence, and resistance have intersected in the lives of straight, queer, cis, and trans women and gender non-binary people of African descent across the diaspora into conversation with graduate students, junior faculty, and each other. The Sex & Slavery Lab is convened by Jessica Marie Johnson, Assistant Professor in the Department of History and the Center for Africana Studies at the Johns Hopkins University.
